A visit to the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican museum to boot. Walk around the Roman Forum and the Colosseum. Our last full day in Europe.
Arrival in Rome and some time with the faithful on the sabbath day in St. Peter’s basilica. A pleasant stroll through Rome seeing familiar sights along with weekend romans enjoying the weather.
Overcast weather for a day trip into Florence. Walking past famous and familiar sights plus a visit to the Accademia (no lines for same day visitors!) where we were practically alone viewing the David by Michelangelo (no photos allowed).
A day of travel through the wine country of Tuscany on our way to Sienna. Saw Sienna’s striking colors and contrasts on a day with clouds skittering through the air. Finished the day at San Gimignano as the skies covered over with grey and the towers stood mute.
Morning in the food markets of Bologna. Travel in our rented Fiat 500 across the Apennine mountain range. Glorious vistas culminating in our arrival at Waldensian retreat center, Casa Cares in Tuscany.
Wonderful worship at the Waldensian Church in Milan followed by a stroll around the city. The sanctuary was beautifully renovated … but I forgot to take photos! It was a “no car” day in the city so everyone was out strolling or on bikes (no cars to hop around!).
A long train travel day from Arles to Milano via the Cote d’ Azure and many tunnels in Italy! Wonderful to arrive with friends from the Waldensian Church in Milano for dinner and gracious hospitality of the Mack family.
Powerful day at Merindol, site where a village of Waldensians / Protestants, were sent through a faux door (looks like a window in the photo) to their death down a cliff. One of many villages that suffered for their conscience. Loumarin was also visited by Waldensians before the Reformation. Baux-de-Provence is .. well .. beaux.
Train delays kept us home in Arles for a windy day of “Le Mistral”. Yet it was a great market day and chance to peruse all the local shops and fare. – Concerned for all our friends in the Chicago blizzard!
A day by car through the Camargue, and Huguenot Languedoc. Lunch in Sauve. Visit to Mialet and other Huguenot landmarks.
A quiet Sunday in quiet Arles, France. River traffic outside our window, fish soup and mutton stew for lunch, joyous worship in the French Reformed Church of Arles with Pastor Cecile Badet-Plaa delivering a word on the Beatitudes.
Rainy day for reading, laundry, eating, photography, antiquity, and a visit to the hospital where Vincent Van Gogh recuperated.
